Just in time for Valentine’s Day, we have an awesome DIY tutorial brought to you by crafty mama Elisabeth over at Beach Bum & Baby. She is showing us how to create this awesome burlap banner with just a few art supplies and a whole lot of creativity. The perfect activity for you and your little ones to try together. We hope you Enjoy!

I have been “pinning” pictures of burlap banners since I first joined Pinterest last Spring and finally decided that it was time to get down to business and create my own!

I don’t have a specific tutorial that I used - mainly bits and pieces of things that I have seen and a little bit of creativity!

    Supplies:

    - Burlap (1 yard is more than enough)

    - Thick Jute String

    - Heat’n Bond/glue gun

    - Paint Pen; Paint

    - “Foam Pouncers” to make polka dots

    - Fabric Shears

    How to:

First, lay out your burlap and decide on what size you would like your rectangles to be. Make sure you leave extra room at the top to fold over your string. The great thing about burlap is that wherever you decide you’d like to make a cut - you can pull out a piece of the burlap and you will be able to see exactly where you need to make your cut and it will be a straight line!

Use your first rectangle as a template for cutting out the rest so that they are all exactly the same size. You will them want to iron your burlap to make it easier to work with (and it looks so much nicer once ironed). I also pulled one string out of the burlap on each edge to give it more of a “shabby chic” look!

After my rectangles were cut, I went over to my computer and printed out the letters I was using in a large, bold font. I then placed the paper behind the burlap and used that as a guide. I outlined the letter on the burlap using a paint pen and then filled it in using a paint brush. (Just make sure your paint pen and paint are the exact same color.)

I repeated this step for each rectangle, let them dry and then used my foam pouncers (found in the stenciling section - I got a variety pack by Martha Stewart at Michael’s for $5) to make the polka dots.

Once these are 100% dry then heat up your iron and get your heat’n bond ready. Take your rectangle, lay it upside down with the string on top and fold the extra over. Then you can iron it and trim off the excess burlap once it has cooled. I like my banner to be able to move but you can also hot glue the rectangles directly to the string if you like!

And ta-da! You are all ready for Valentine’s Day!
